Perfect strangers desperately tried to rescue a badly injured 17-month-old baby girl, as well as a 3-year-old boy and his grandmother, pinned under a car in Williamsburg Friday.

Edwin Padua is a longtime friend of the woman who was pinned underneath the car. They are neighbors who live near the corner where the crash happened.

He said he happened to be nearby and immediately jumped into action.

"I hear a baby crying. I see her sneakers. I recognized her sneakers and I said 'Hey, yo, guys, they're under the car. We need to pick this car up,'" Padua said. "So about 15-20 of us, we all lifted all four wheels up, the whole car, we picked it all up, took the baby out."

The accident happened just after 1 p.m. Witnesses say a man driving a gray four-door Hyundai jumped a sidewalk filled with people, ran over and pinned 3-year-old Tyrese Owens, his grandmother, Elizabeth Castillo and a friend's baby who they were taking care of.

Padua notified Castillo's daughter, Camille, who rushed to the scene.

"My mother was standing here with my nephew and her friend's daughter," Camille said. "He was backing up. He backed up and he hit a couple of people at first. He kind of just nudged them. After he hit them, he ran right straight back into my mother and my nephew."

Michael Green, the father of the baby, came to the scene after visiting his daughter in the hospital.

"I went to the hospital, I went to go see her. They say she was doing alright," he said. "I'm crying because that's my baby, that's my baby girl."

Witnesses say the driver was an older man who may have panicked. They say he did not look intoxicated and say he stayed on the scene until police arrived.

Family members told NY1 the victims were taken to Bellevue Hospital. The father of the 17-month old baby told NY1 she has a broken arm and scars on her face. But all three are expected to be OK.
