It happened on East 223rd Street in Edenwald just before noon.

The dog's owner said he walked in on the 65-pound pit bull attacking his grandmother, 70-year-old Janet Green.

He said she was taking out the trash when she was mauled.

The grandson then pushed his dog, named Tony, out the front gate.

Green was bitten on her face and neck.

She had surgery and is expected to be OK.

The man said his pit bull is aggressive but never bit anyone.

Neighbors said the dogs are well taken care of.

"Those pit bulls were so nice, you know," said one neighbor. "There was no problem, you know. But they keep dogs out. There was no issue. They treat the pit bulls pretty good from what I can see."

The dog got away after the attack and has not yet been found.

The owner said he anticipates that he will have to put the dog down because he said he has children in the house.

The family also has a female pit bull and three puppies.
