Annual Brides March Raises Domestic Violence Awareness

Dozens of women in wedding dresses traded a walk down the aisle for a six-mile march through Upper Manhattan and the South Bronx Wednesday to raise awareness of domestic violence.
The women were taking part in the 12th annual Bride March, organized by New York Latinas Against Domestic Violence.
The event started back in 2001 to remember Gladys Ricart, who was killed by her ex-boyfriend on the day she was set to wed another man.
Participants say the march not only honors Ricart but boosts awareness of the devastating effect domestic violence has on families and communities.
"This march, this message is very clear. We're not going to tolerate domestic violence in our city. We're going to come together-led in this case by some very young teenage girls, come together girls, women men to change this in our city," said City Council Speaker Christine Quinn.
"It's no longer a private issue. We need to come together to put an end to the violence against women," said one march participant.
