Some elected officials in Manhattan say much more needs to be done to improve safety at public housing complexes on the Lower East Side.
Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer, State Senator Daniel Squadron, and Assemblyman Brian Kavanagh say their offices surveyed 500 people in 10 developments.
They say more than half of those who responded report their lobby doors do not lock properly.
Just under half say they have a working intercom system.
In their report, elected officials say the city housing authority needs to get moving on improvements in the wake of a recent crime upswing.
In July, a police officer was shot at one of the complexes where the survey was conducted.
Among the report's recommendations is to move more quickly to install security cameras, and making crime statistics in public housing available on the web.
