A city bus driver is in the hospital after being attacked by a passenger in the Morrisania section of the Bronx.

The attack happened on the Bx41 around 8:15 a.m. Thursday at 161st Street and Melrose Avenue.

Police say a rider came in the back door without paying.

The bus drivers' union says that passenger asked the driver for a transfer, which the driver refused to do.

The 53-year-old driver was then punched and choked by the rider, according to police.

The driver was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital, according to the union.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority says there have been dozens of assaults on bus drivers this year.

More have occurred in the Bronx than any other borough.

The attacker from this morning is still at large. Anyone with information on the case should contact the Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS, or text CRIMES and then enter TIP577, or visit www.nypdcrimestoppers.com.
