A new proposal could soon force restaurants to warn customers about food allergens.

City Councilman David Greenfield is set to introduce legislation today to require restaurants and catering halls to post signs in five languages alerting customers if the food they serve contains any of the eight most common allergens.

The rule would apply to establishments already required to post calorie counts and Health Department letter grades.

If passed, violators would face a $100 fine.
