The New York City Police Department says the chase began just before 10 a.m. in the expressway's southbound lanes, where it crosses over Third Avenue.

Witnesses say a silver Nissan Altima could be seen driving on the lefthand shoulder followed by several police cars including one that was unmarked.

At one point, witnesses say the driver turned around and began driving the wrong way.

"I hit him, it was so fast you didn't know. He was in reverse and the unmarked car was chasing him," said the driver of a delivery truck.

Police say an unknown number of cars were hit or sideswiped before officers were able to block in the driver and arrest him.

One driver who spoke with NY1 at the scene says she was afraid her car would be hit head on.

"He cut me off completely, I broad-sided him. So then, I started pulling over to the shoulder. He was on the shoulder as well. Then he started backing up; I hit him again. Then he started backing up in reverse all the way down the freeway. Yeah, it was pretty intense. A couple of minutes later he started heading straight for us and was just praying he'd swerve away in time," said the driver.

One witness says the car appeared to have been stolen from a sales lot because it still had a dealer sticker on it.

The three officers were taken to Cornell Medical Center for treatment.

The fire department says one other person was taken to Lincoln Hospital for treatment.

An investigation is ongoing.
