State Says 123 Schools Need Overhauls

State Education officials say 123 city schools must undergo major overhauls or be closed by the 2014-15 school year.
The city schools make up more than half of a statewide list marking the bottom 5 percent of schools, based on test scores and graduation rates.
The new designation and reforms are part of the state's revised requirements under the federal No Child Left Behind Act.
Of the 123 city schools, all but one serve high poverty populations.
The city is in the process of closing 16 of the schools already and it tried to replace the teachers at 24 others but was stopped by a court order last month.
The city must tell the state what it plans to do with all 123 schools by September.
Most of the reform options require a new teacher evaluation system, which the city and union have been unable to agree on.
That could leave closure as the only option.
Listed below are the 123 New York City schools that are in need of a major overhaul, according to New York State education officials. Schools marked with an asterisk are already in the process of being closed.
