Police were looking Monday for the parents of a newborn girl who was found abandoned late Sunday at the Woodside Houses in Queens.

Investigators say a passerby heard the baby girl crying shortly after 11:30 p.m. Sunday at the Woodside Houses and called police.

Officers found the baby, who was only a few hours old, wrapped in towels and sheets behind a building near Broadway and 51st Street.

"I'm sad that, that happened but I hope they find the person who did it because I don't think that's nothing to live with. I really think that there's something really wrong with that person," said one resident.

"You really don't do that to a child. That is wrong. You couldn't knock on someone's door or take the baby to a hospital?" said another resident.

The baby was taken to Elmhurst Hospital.

Authorities said Monday she appeared to be in good health.

The state's Safe Haven law allows a person to abandon a newborn at a safe place like a hospital or police station without fear of prosecution.
