The Air Force Week is jetting into the city for the second time, letting New Yorkers meet with distinguished members of the U.S. Air Force and take part in events from Sunday through Tuesday.

Events kicked off Sunday afternoon with a proclamation ceremony at the Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum on Manhattan's West Side.

The Thunderbirds aerial demonstration team is conducting a Hudson River flyover in its F-16s at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Over the next few days there will be Air Force displays at the Intrepid, flyovers and concerts throughout the five boroughs.

Visitors to the Intrepid will also be able to meet with distinguished members of the Air Force, including the Air Force's trained dogs on one of its trained falcons.

These events are meant to thank the public for its support for the Air Force, give civilians a better idea of the service members' duties and try to inspire youngsters to want to join the force or pursue studies in science and engineering.

"We currently have 13 birds at the [Air Force] Academy and Destiny [the falcon] here is to help us support Air Force Week," said Air Force Cadet First Class Danielle Cortez.

"The American public is very, very supportive of their airmen and in fact all of the military services, so we're very appreciative of that. But this is our opportunity to return that thanks by showing a little bit about what the Air Force does and some of the things we're most proud of," said Air Force Major General Bill Bender.

"I like just seeing the way they fly. It's amazing how they can do all those tricks and everything," said one young visitor at the Intrepid.

Flyovers are also planned during the New York Mets and Brooklyn Cyclones baseball games on Monday and Tuesday.
