The Allen Street mall has been reconstructed between Delancey and Hester Streets to include the bike paths, benches, lighting and trees.

"It's good that it takes us off the main road because cars don't really look out for cyclists as they are coming along," said one cyclist.

"It's nice having the trees and stuff too, kind of makes you feel like you are in the wilderness a little bit," said another cyclist.

A similar project is ongoing nearby at Pike Street between Madison and South Streets.

It's expected to open by the end of the month.

Transportation Alternatives Deputy Director Noah Budnick says the projects are the result of a community process where everyone wants safety.

"The final design here has safe space for everyone who wants to use the street. And by keeping users out of each others way, we keep them out of harms way," Budnick said.

The project comes at an overall cost of $9 million, with more than half coming from the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation.

The Parks Department says reconstruction of the malls along the bike paths should be finished next month, once more landscaping and benches are installed.
