Residents of 420 Melrose Street were told to evacuate after an accident at a nearby construction site raised questions about the stability of their building.

While they're being allowed to retrieve belongings, they are not allowed to stay.

Some residents NY1 spoke with said they called 311 Tuesday after noticing cracks in their walls, doors not closing and windowsills jutting out.

"There was a major shift yesterday. Before, we didn't, I actually didn't notice any cracking. I just noticed two doors weren't able to shut which, you know, that's somewhat normal for construction but last night was really concerning. We were pretty close to calling 911 last night," said one displaced resident.

"I woke up with my building shaking," said another resident. "Things were falling off the shelves. The water in the toilet was moving. It felt like an earthquake."

The evacuation also affected residents of 418 Melrose Street but they've since been allowed to return home.

Meanwhile, the Department of Buildings has issued five violations to the construction company working on the neighboring site.

Department of Buildings officials said they issued a stop work order against the construction project on July 23, saying the contractor had failed to monitor vibrations, build a complete fence around the building and file technical reports.

The Red Cross said it's providing emergency housing overnight for 10 people.
