Family and friends of the Manhattan soldier who killed himself last year headed to North Carolina for the court martial of a soldier charged in connection with his death.

Community members joined some of the family of Private Danny Chen in Chinatown before about 12 of them started the 10-hour ride.

Sergeant Adam Holcomb is the first of eight soldiers facing charges in the case.

Investigators said Chen shot himself while stationed in Afghanistan after weeks of severe hazing.

"I think it's important for the army to know that the community stands strong behind the family and also for the people who are charged in this case to really look all of us in the eye and tell us, you know, why did you do this to Danny,” said Councilwoman Margaret Chin.

The trial will begin at Fort Bragg Tuesday.
