Low-Wage Worker Groups Announce New Report Highlighting City's Income Inequalities

A new report finds low-wage work is undermining New York City communities and its economy.
The groups United NY and ALIGN: The Alliance for a Greater New York found that four in 10 households in the city are forced to live on minimum or near-minimum wages.

The study found that one in five New Yorkers lives below the federal poverty line of about $11,000 a year.
At the same time, New Yorkers are some of the highest paid workers in the world.
The study also highlights some of the worst low-wage employers in the city, incluing Golden Farm supermarket in Kensington, Brooklyn, Toys "R" Us and Con Edison.
The report recommends employers raise the minimum wage, require employers who accept taxpayer subsidies to hire locally, make it easier for workers to gain collective bargaining rights and crack down on wage theft.
