A construction worker is in the hospital after plunging five stories down an elevator shaft in Manhattan.

The incident happened at approximately 11 a.m. Monday morning on the Upper West Side.

According to another worker at the scene, the man was hooked up to a harness when it gave way.

The man was taken to St. Luke's Hospital.

He is part of a crew at Fordham University's Lincoln Center campus, where major construction is underway for a new law school building and residence hall.

NY1 has reached out to Gotham Construction and is awaiting a response.
