Major weekday renovations began Monday on the Alexander Hamilton Bridge, which connects Manhattan to the Bronx, but there were no major traffic issues this morning as drivers searched for alternate routes.

The bridge, which is a major artery to the Cross Bronx Expressway and I-95, opened in 1963 and has never had major repair work.

One eastbound lane with be closed around-the-clock until October as crews build a new concrete deck and repair the underlying steel in the Bronx-bound lanes.

The work could create major traffic tie-ups on the inbound George Washington Bridge, but drivers told NY1 this morning that the traffic flow seemed smooth.

"Oh, it was fairly clear. I had no problems at all. Traffic was very light this morning," said a driver.

"It seems like it was pretty smooth so far," said another. "I can come local, so I have that option. I feel bad for the people that have to cross the bridge, you know?"

"It's just basically working my way around it every day," said a third. "Going local if I can, if I have to go to Jersey, I have no choice but to stay stuck in traffic for a little bit."

The state Department of Transportation recommends drivers look for alternate routes, which include other area bridges and tunnels.

New York Waterway Ferries also provide travel alternatives.

All construction on the bridge is scheduled to wrap up by the end of the year.

Meanwhile, drivers using the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge on Tuesday afternoon will have their own traffic issue.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority says the RFK Bridge's Harlem River Lift Span will be closed to traffic in both directions at 3 p.m. Tuesday for maintenance and for river traffic to pass.

The closure is expected to last 20 minutes.

The Willis Avenue Bridge may be the best alternative.
