More than 1,200 police recruits were sworn in to the New York City Police Department's Police Academy during a ceremony at Queens College Wednesday.
About one in five of the recruits was born outside the U.S., representing 50 countries.
72 served in the military and more than a third have bachelor's or advanced degrees.
One recruit, Erin Coughlin, is following in the footsteps of her father, Sgt. John Coughlin, who was killed on Sept. 11, 2001.
"As a legacy child, I go in knowing the great things that have come to my family from this job," she said. "I mean, horrible things happened but it brought some of the greatest people I know in the entire world into my life. So I get to continue that legacy for my dad."
The recruits will enter the academy on Monday.
If they complete training, they'll graduate in December.
