City pools officially opened for the season Thursday and comes just in time for those looking to beat the heat as temperatures are once again expected to soar over the next few days.
Lifeguards will be on duty from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day.
The city has 55 outdoor pools spread across the five boroughs, including the newly renovated McCarren Park Pool in Greenpoint which opens today for the first time in nearly three decades.
"This project makes good on a promise we made five years ago as part of our city's long term sustainability agenda plaNYC," said Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
"When they first broke ground here I didn't believe it, and I said, we'll see, and they kept their word," noted Greenpoint Resident Peggy McCarthy
McCarren was built in 1936 as a federal job creation project, but fell into neglect and was shut down in 1983. It was recently used as a temporary concert and events venue, but a $50 million project has returned it to its former glory as one of the city's largest pools, holding a million gallons of water.
It's a place for kids of all ages to cool off and have some summer fun.
New outdoor dressing rooms made way for the old dressing area to be transformed into a rec center with a fitness area, basketball court and community gathering spaces. The former diving pool is now a beach volleyball court. And in the winter there is room for an ice skating rink.
"This will be a full service, year round indoor outdoor recreational complex," said Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe.
"I think this pool is really nice and it's really big from other pools," said one young swimmer.
The pools traditionally open on the first day of summer break for city school kids.
Wednesday was the last day of class for the city's 1.1 million public school students.
Those who have to go to summer school will get a brief break, with summer classes starting on Monday, July 9.
Pools close for the season on September 3.
