Charges are pending against a driver who police say caused an accident that shut down traffic on part of the Belt Parkway this morning.

Police said the driver of a Honda Accord was pulled over for going 86-miles per hour around 6 a.m. Tuesday.

But when the highway patrol officer approached the car, investigators said it made a U-turn and headed west in the eastbound lanes.

Officials said the driver hit an Access-a-Ride van with seven people inside, which then hit another car carrying two people.

"The driver of the car that was pulled over will be arrested. He has a previous record of a suspended license. This may be why he decided to run," said Police Commissioner Ray Kelly.

Kelly said eight people were taken to Lutheran Hospital, including the Honda driver who suffered a broken leg.

The accident forced the closure of all eastbound lanes and two westbound lanes until about 7:30 a.m.
