An investigation is under way after an elderly Bronx woman was found dead in her Williamsbridge Road home Saturday morning in a case that police are treating as a homicide.
Police said a relative called police after finding Evelyn Shapiro, 88, unconscious and unresponsive shortly before 10 a.m. Saturday inside an apartment at the Pelham Parkway Houses on Williamsbridge Road in Allerton.
Police said they found the door unlocked and groceries scattered all over the apartment when they arrived.
Shapiro suffered blunt force trauma to the head, according to police.
Police said EMS pronounced her dead at the scene.
Neighbors who spoke with NY1 say Shapiro was a caring woman who was quite active.
"The apartment was ransacked. And there was maybe some jewelry and stuff missing. But until they speak back with her family, I don't think they'll know for sure," said one neighbor.
"Sick to my stomach. It's making me think, maybe I should leave now. Things are getting this bad around here," said another.
Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. released a statement Saturday afternoon praising Shapiro as "a well-known pillar of her community" and vowed to find "her murderer."
"I call on anyone with information about this murder to come forward so that we can put this savage behind bars," he said. "Anyone who could so brutally take the life of an 88-year-old woman is a monster, has no place in our society and the sooner they are off of our streets the better."
Anyone with information about the case is being asked to contact Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-577-TIPS, by texting TIP577 to CRIMES, or by going to NYPDCrimeStoppers.com.
