MTA Construction Head Gives Students Second Avenue Subway Preview

The second avenue subway project has brought a steady stream of complaints by residents about the noise and the dirt caused by the construction. So on Tuesday, the man in charge reached out to elementary school students on the Upper East Side, hoping to put a more positive spin on things. NY1's Tina Redwine filed the following report.Second-graders at the Yorkville Community School were in awe of the new Second Avenue subway project, which was presented to them by the MTA Capital Construction President Michael Horodniceanu.
The Yorkville students are studying transportation at school. Since they live near the construction, they get a daily hands-on lesson.
Most of the complaints from the community are about the dust and noise but Horodniceanu says it will all be worth it.
"There are too many people and not enough subways," he told the students during his presentation.
If all goes as expected, the students and other Second Avenue residents will get to ride the line in four years. The line was supposed to be finished this year.
"The future of this city is going to be mass transit, not riding cars," Horodniceanu said. "Bottom line, it's an opportunity for us to make a long lasting impact for children."
The students then showed Horodniceanu their plans for a new First Avenue subway, which stretched from Bleecker Street to 125th Street.
But the children's dream will have to wait. Horodniceanu and the MTA first have to deal with the reality of getting the Second Avenue line up and running.
