A jury will soon decide the fate of former State Senator Pedro Espada, Jr.

During closing arguments Friday in his corruption trial, the prosecution told jurors Espada and his son thought they could get away with stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from the Soundview Health Care Clinic that he founded in the Bronx.

Prosecutors say Espada blamed everyone – even his own wife – for so-called mistakes uncovered by the government.

"Pretty great to be Pedro Espada," said Assistant U.S. Attorney Roger Burlingame. "Every time someone makes a mistake, you end up with a pocket full of money."

Espada's lawyer says his client was entitled to much of the money he received because he got a daily stipend of $200 from the clinic.

Espada and his son each face up to 15 years in prison if convicted.
