Exactly 100 years since an iceberg sank the RMS Titanic, the doomed ship's intended destination of New York City marked on Sunday the centennial of the disaster that killed more than 1,500 people.
The state-of-the-art ocean liner sank early in the morning of April 15, 1912, after hitting an iceberg late the previous night.
The Titanic was sailing on its maiden voyage from Southampton, England to New York City with more than 2,200 people on board when it hit the iceberg.
The ocean liner was supposed to dock at Manhattan's Pier 59, which is now the Chelsea Piers' golf driving range.
The Noble Maritime Collection at the Snug Harbor Cultural Center on Staten Island opened a Titanic-related art exhibit on Sunday.
Overseas, a new memorial featuring the names of all victims was unveiled Sunday in Northern Ireland, where the Titanic was built.
Several ships traveled to the spot the ship sank, including the Azamara Journey, for services in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.
