Police are investigating the death of an elderly supermarket owner whose body was discovered inside his Queens early Monday morning.
The New York City Police Department says a caretaker found the body of Demaso Llano, 89, near the front door of his home located at 95-19 43rd Avenue in Corona.
Sources say his hands were bound with plastic cuffs and he appears to have suffered severe head trauma.
According to published reports, his apartment appeared to have been ransacked and police are investigating whether he was the victim of a robbery.
Llano was an owner of the El Mundo Supermarket.
"It's devastating, totally devastating. We're all in shock. We can't believe that such a thing has happened to such a gentle gentleman," said one neighbor.
"For this sweet, generous, kind-hearted, wonderful man who helped a lot of people in the community to die like this. We are fuming. So we truly believe it's somebody he knew," said another neighbor.
Police have not said whether anything was taken from Llano's home.
