Multiple Witnesses Claim They Received Stolen Medical Clinic Money From Former Sen. Espada

By: NY1 News

More than a dozen witnesses took the stand for the prosecution in the embezzlement trial against former Senate Majority Leader Pedro Espada Thursday.

Most of them were people Espada paid for various expenses using money he allegedly stole from the non-profit health care clinic he ran in the Bronx.

The most damaging testimony Thursday came from a woman hired to videotape birthday parties thrown for Espada's grandchildren.

She testified that after she sent an invoice over, demanding payment for her work, Espada's executive assistant asked her to rewrite the document to state that she had not videotaped a birthday party, but instead videotaped a children's community outreach event held on a different day.

Espada faces up to 15 years in prison.
