Ahead of the Saturday's St. Patrick's Day Parade, Cardinal Timothy Dolan announced the first step in a massive project to restore St. Patrick's Cathedral.
Standing alongside local leaders and church supporters, Dolan announced a $45 million first phase of the project, which will restore the cathedral's exterior and its windows.
The cardinal showed off a small section of stone that's already been cleaned.
But Dolan says the church still needs to raise $125 million for phases two and three, which involve completely repairing the inside of the church and its grounds.
"Since I arrived three years ago, we together have heard the chant, 'Archbishop Dolan, tear down this scaffolding. Rebuild this church,'" Dolan said.
Prior to the parade Dolan also led a prayer service that attended by Governor Andrew Cuomo and Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
