City Councilman Jumaane Williams plans to introduce a bill next week requiring New York City Police Department officers to hand out cards with their name, rank and unit.

Williams says the measure would help eliminate some of the mistrust of police officers.

The bill would also bar profiling of minorities and would require officers to tell a target they have the right to refuse a search.

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly says the NYPD already issues cards explaining the stop and frisk policy, though officers are not required to give them out.

Figures released by the department last week show 87 percent of those who were searched by cops were black or Hispanic.

Supporters say more than 8,000 weapons have been taken off the street as a result of these searches.
