Approximately 9,000 formerly homeless families are in danger of being evicted after the city cuts off rent-assistance payments this month.

The city initially canceled the Advantage rent-subsidy program in March after losing state and federal funding, but a court order forced them to continue payments while legal challenges were heard.

That court order was lifted Thursday.

An appeal is set to be heard next week, but officials say the city plans to stop paying rent immediately.

Officials at the Department of Homeless Services say the program is too expensive for the city to support on its own, and they will not be paying rent for February.

Advocates for the homeless warn this could flood the shelter system.

They say the Advantage program is cheaper than putting people in shelters.
