The Giants face the San Francisco 49ers Sunday in the fateful NFC Championship. NY1’s Kevin Garrity filed the following report.

It’s hard to believe that just one month ago, the Giants season was teetering on the brink of disaster with a 7-7 record and no sure bet that the playoffs would be in their future.

Now big blue is just one win away from heading to their second super bowl in five years.

"We’ve been playing smart football. We've been playing as a team and one unit and everybody’s trying to help one another, and we have to keep on doing that," said Giants quarterback Eli Manning.

There are plenty of NFL players who never reach a championship game or get a sniff of the Super Bowl, so for the dozen or so Giants who were part of the Super Bowl champs who beat the Patriots back in February 2008, the message is clear to the young Giants and those who have never made it this far: enjoy the moment because it may never happen again.

"You’re doing everything you can so when you go to this game, number one you play relaxed and free and that you leave everything out on the field and come out on top," said Giants offensive tackle David Diehl.

The weather forecast in San Francisco calls for a wet weekend. The Giants, who won their last NFC championship in -23 temperatures in Green Bay, are not worried about the conditions.

“We can’t do anything about it. We have to play in it. If we have to dunk the ball in a bucket of water a few times this week, then we'll do that. We're gonna prepare for whatever happens," said Giants head coach Tom Coughlin.
