Strong winds may have played a role in a billboard collapse on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway Friday.

City officials say the sign fell onto the westbound lanes near Metropolitan Avenue in Brooklyn.

The collapse prompted lane closures, causing heavy traffic for motorists.

While no definitive cause has been named, the city was experiencing 50 mile-per-hour winds.

There have been no reports of any injuries.

"I live across the street and I just sorta heard—sounded like gunshots," said one resident.

"I was sitting on my couch and the whole house just shook," said another.
