Senator Kirsten Gillibrand announced legislation Sunday to crack down on corrupt gun dealers.
Joined by Attorney General Eric Schneiderman and representatives from groups against gun violence, Gillibrand said she wants to toughen penalties to reduce the flow of illegal firearms into and around the state.
"Whether you're Democrat or Republican, you can agree we want to keep our families safe, and this is a bill that does not affect a law-abiding citizen or the Second Amendment. It goes straight for the criminals," said Gillibrand.
"The worst-kept secret in America that anybody can get a gun," said Schneiderman.
The bill comes after the attorney general charged 10 dealers with selling weapons without background checks at gun shows statewide.
The attorney general said his eight-month investigation found vendors were selling guns to people who admitted they could not pass a background check.
Schneiderman says nearly 90 percent of the firearms used in gun crimes in New York City come from out of state.
