City officials have decided to postpone a new homeless shelter policy that some say would limit access to single adults.

The measure was scheduled to take effect Monday until advocates for the homeless asked a judge to look into its legality.

A spokesperson for the Department of Homeless Services said the DHS will delay the policy until a judge reviews it on December 9.

The new protocol would require single adults to be interviewed before entering a shelter to determine whether they have other sleeping options.

Critics argue it's cruel and irresponsible to turn New Yorkers away from shelters, but the DHS commissioner said the new requirements are lawful and designed to "preserve shelters as a valuable resource for those most in need."
