The group remained bundled up in Zuccotti Park as the sixth week of demonstrations began.

However, a medical organizer said there were cases of hypothermia.

Protesters said the chilly weather makes living in the park a challenge.

"With the police coming in, taking down shelter quite often, it makes it very difficult for people to stay safe. Shelter's a basic need for folks out here and we haven't been able to reliably get that," said one demonstrator.

Protesters are also trying to stay warm without the heat sources they've relied on in the past. This, after the fire department conducted a surprise inspection and confiscated power generators and gas cans.

Demonstrators are now experimenting with new ways of making electricity, including bike pedal power.

Meanwhile, the group is also battling elements within the movement.

The west side of the plaza is quickly gaining a reputation for vagrancy, theft and drugs while the east side seems filled with committed activists.

As a result, protesters say they have started to police themselves.

"The community watch started on Thursday. It's a new initiative where we just have a lot more people walking around at night trying to keep everyone safe," said one protester.

Demonstrators say they will continue to feed anyone who comes to the site and allow them to camp.

A source in the park tells NY1 the protesters now have at least half a million dollars in donations.

Protests Continue Nationwide

In Denver, protesters marched outside the Colorado state Capitol building.

Police fired pepper spray and used pepper-ball guns against demonstrators.

One officer was knocked off his motorcycle and two others were kicked in the head. Seven people were arrested.

Marchers also took to the streets again in Oakland, California.

An Iraq War veteran was seriously injured in a clash with police there last week.
