Community Board Votes Down Rezoning Of Former St. Vincent's Site

By: NY1 News

A Greenwich Village Community Board voted down a proposal Thursday night to allow the property that once housed St. Vincent's hospital to be rezoned for private use, putting a possible kink in a developer's plans to turn it into luxury condos.

The board voted 40-1.

Residents of the area have voiced opposition saying anything less than a new hospital puts them at risk.

However, a proposal to build an AIDS memorial park across the street from the location where many early victims received care has some support.

"They're really looking into what the community has to say, and whether the community board and whether the neighbors and villagers in general would support this," said Queer History Alliance Co-Founder Christopher Topper.

"It's a compelling idea, there's no question. I think it's great that a citizen group can propose an idea for new open space in a neighborhood and be taken seriously," said Community Board 2 Chairman Brad Hoylman.

While the board's vote is considered advisory, the developer's plan would also have to clear several hurdles, including approval from the borough president, planning commission and City Council.
