Former Bloomberg Aide's Lawyer Accuses Mayor Of Lying On Stand

Closing arguments took place Tuesday in the trial of Mayor Michael Bloomberg's former political advisor.

John Haggerty, seen above, is charged with grand larceny and money laundering for allegedly stealing more than a million dollars from the mayor's 2009 campaign.

He could face up to 25 years in prison if convicted of taking money that was meant for a ballot security operation.

Haggerty’s lawyer targeted Bloomberg in his summation, saying the mayor led a win-at-all-costs campaign and lied on the stand.

“They overpaid for every single item in that campaign and they didn't rely on anything my client gave them concerning a ballot security budget. That's the point of the overspend. That's the point of win-at-all costs, because they did not care,” said Dennis Vacco, Haggerty's attorney.

Bloomberg's office says the mayor's testimony was accurate.

In his summation, Haggerty’s lawyer never said his client actually did the work for which he was paid.

The jury will begin deliberations Wednesday morning.

Haggerty faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted.
