State lawmakers are calling for an investigation into alleged spying against Muslims by the New York City Police Department.
In a letter to Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, seven state senators cite an Associated Press investigation that found the NYPD monitored bookstores and restaurants frequented by Muslims in addition to mosques.
The lawmakers want to know whether police violated the state's constitution by conducting "surveillance and operations without evidence of criminality or wrongdoing."
Representatives from Schneiderman's office say they are reviewing the letter.
