New Yorkers know about the city police department's high-tech terror-fighting tools, but in an interview on CBS' "60 Minutes," Police Commissioner Ray Kelly first admitted the NYPD has the ability to take down an airplane if necessary.
"In an extreme situation, we would have some means to take down a plane," Kelly said. "I'd prefer not to get into the details, but obviously this would be in a very extreme situation."
The NYPD had not previously disclosed the existence of anti-aircraft weapons.
Some residents told NY1 this morning that knowing about the NYPD's firepower made them feel safer, while others question if such force was necessary.
"It surprises me, but I like it. I like to know that we're being protected," said a New Yorker.
"Why not? I mean, this is New York, and we should be ready and have the capability to take on anything," said another.
"It makes me feel very bad, especially because I live and work here," said a third. "I mean, police could shoot a plane, you said? That's very scary, that's very scary."
Kelly also said the NYPD created its own counterterrorism unit after the September 11th attacks because he felt the department could no longer completely rely on the federal government to protect against terror attacks.
