Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad addressed the United Nations General Assembly today as protestors gathered outside calling for the international body to rescind Iran's UN membership.
The U.S. delegation once again walked out as the Iranian leader blasted the nation's history in regards to slavery, its use of nuclear bombs and its support of military regimes in Africa, Asia and Latin America.
He also accused the United States of using September 11th as a pretext to attack Afghanistan and Iraq in order to get Middle Eastern oil.
"By using their imperialistic media network which is under the influence of colonialism, they threaten anyone who questions the Holocaust and September 11th with sanctions and military action," said Ahmadinejad.
In an interview with the Associated Press, Ahmadinejad said his background as an engineer convinced him there was no way two planes could have brought down the trade towers, but stopped short of saying it was an inside job.
Ahmadinejad made no mention of Tehran's nuclear program in his speech.
More than a dozen diplomats from other countries, including France, also walked out during the remarks.
Some people who spoke with NY1 outside said they were not looking forward to Ahmadinejad's address and expressed support for the protestors.
"I'm all for it. I mean, the whole world is against him and he's shown time and time again to be defiant of the nuclear policies that the UN has tried to establish and I think he should go," said one New Yorker.
"There's a lot of these rallies, but I really don't see anything ever changing," said another.
"Why don't we give it to [Iranian reformist politician Mir-Hossein] Moussavi, to the head of the green revolution? Why don't we give it to all the Iranian people who were oppressed for many many years by the regime of Ahmadinejad?" said a third.
Police stepped up their presence around the United Nations in anticipation of Ahmadinejad's appearance.
