Commuters started feeling the pinch of higher tolls Sunday, as the increases in fare prices on Port Authority bridges and tunnels went into effect at 3:00 a.m.

Peak cash prices are at $12, and fares are also more expensive for PATH train tickets.

Some drivers are already wondering about the broader effects of the fare hikes.

"I have to go back and forth, but there are folks I'm sure they're not going to be able to go back and forth. I mean, they might only want certain people in the city," said one driver.

"I think it's crazy. My parents live here, I live in Long Island, and now I'm barely going to be able to come visit them because I won't be able to afford it," said another.

Port Authority said the money raised will go toward road repairs and infrastructure upgrades, as well as the rebuilding effort at the World Trade Center, but AAA representatives say it's illegal to use the hikes to build buildings and have called on Washington to roll them back.
