Vehicle checkpoints are still in place throughout the city as Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said Monday that the department will be keeping its guard up following the 10th anniversary of the September 11th attacks.

Police say reports of suspicious packages over the weekend more than tripled from the same period last year to more than 340.

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said the heightened security would continue throughout the week.

"So far so good, we're certainly not declaring victory. We're gonna keep our level of security high, certainly into next week, as we start. We have no reason to lower it," Kelly said.

While there is some grumbling and honking, New Yorkers, who are not always known for their patience, seem to understand checkpoints are just how it is in a post-9/11 world.

"It's okay, checkpoint. Always okay, because it's for safety," said one driver.

"This is the fourth one I've been through this morning already. You wanna live in a safe world this is what you have to deal with," said another.

The increased security also comes as police say both vans stolen from a World Trade Center contractor have been recovered.

Investigators say there's no evidence the theft of the vans was related to the current terror threat.

Police suspect the vans were targeted for the $70,000 worth of tools that have not been recovered.

No arrests have been made in the thefts.
