Final Ruling On 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund Expands "Crash Site" Borders

The federal government has made its final determination about eligibility for the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund.
The final rule expands the dust zone or "9/11 crash site" to an area south of Canal Street.
Previously, the zone stopped south of Reade Street.
That means anyone who got sick while living or working in that area can now apply for coverage.
However, in a decision likely to raise the ire of some 9/11 survivors, the rule does not expand the types of illnesses covered by the fund.
Applicants for the fund were angry when the Zadroga Act did not include cancer in the list of ailments.
Special master to the fund Sheila Birnbaum said there is insufficient scientific and medical evidence for adding cancer, but that could change as research continues and new evidence is found.
