More than 400 swimmers braved the waters of the East River Saturday at the 6th annual Brooklyn Bridge Swim.
The race kicked off at Brooklyn Bridge Park and ended at East River Park in Manhattan.
Katherine O'Connor of Mount Vernon New Jersey emerged victorious in the one kilometer swim in 13:30.
"I was kind of hoping to win. But I'm happy about it. It's pretty cool, a really cool experience to be the fastest across. It was cool to swim across a channel. I've never done something like that before so it was a really cool experience," O'Connor said.
Organizers say the turnout was not as high as expected, possibly because of the sewage that was discharged into the Hudson River following last week's fire at a Harlem wastewater plant.
