At a Midtown breakfast event today, Congressman Peter King said he is preparing for a second hearing on the so-called "radicalization" of American Muslims, but he does not believe the country will endure another terrorist attack akin to September 11th.
King said the greatest threat to America now comes from homegrown terrorists who are being actively courted by a weakened al-Qaida.
The congressman said despite that, America is far safer now than it was before the September 11th terrorist attacks.
"There's just such an amalgam of support and cooperation that it would be almost impossible for a 9/11-type attack to happen again," he said.
King's previous hearing drew heated controversy from critics who called it anti-Islamic, and bigoted.
The Long Island congressman denies that charge, saying most Muslim Americans are good.
His next hearing aims to examine how al-Qaida affiliate al Shabab is operating.
