Ed Koch, former mayor of New York City and a Democrat, is crossing party lines to endorse Republican candidate Bob Turner in the race for Anthony Weiner’s vacated seat in the 9th Congressional District.

In a telephone interview, Koch told NY1 that he is backing Turner to send a message to President Barack Obama about his stance on Israel. An official announcement is to come Monday.

The former mayor said that he also hopes the endorsement will send a message to Washington Republicans.

He said Turner will oppose privatizing Social Security and Medicare.

Turner is running against Democratic Assemblyman David Weprin.

The race will be decided in a special election that's being held on September 13.
