Summer is in full-swing at the newly-renovated Union Square Park.

As part of its "Summer in the Square," the Union Square Partnership this year is offering free yoga and running classes as well as a fitness boot camp, theatre, and musical performances.

"It doesn't seem like your ideal zen place to do yoga, but I do think it was nice and everyone that came really wanted to be here," said yoga instructor Bryn Chrisman.

The events take place every Thursday for the next nine weeks.

Organizers say the activities are a great way to get one's day going.

"The Union Square Partnership runs a wide range of programs. So in addition to our marketing, sanitation and public safety programs we run free community events to help bring more activity and enjoyment to the people who live, work and live in the neighborhood," said Jennifer Falk of the Union Square Partnership.

On Thursday, the running club jogged from Union Square to the West Side Highway and back.

"Across the street from Whole Foods we got to stretch. I work on people's form, we do some intervals, we work on form, and then we work on stretching to make sure that everything is working together," said running instructor Terence Gerchberg.

"Yeah I'm a huge fan of the park. I mean it's cool just to see people out exercising. To be a part of it and do it as a group is really cool," said one participant.

"It's a great way to start the day and meet like-minded people in the neighborhood," said another.

The program runs through August 11th.
