Police arrested a convicted sex offender Thursday in connection with the sexual assault of an elderly woman on the Upper East Side earlier this week.
Jeffrey Ritter, 32, of Brooklyn was charged with a criminal sexual act, sexual abuse and robbery.
Police say he took an 85-year-old woman into a doorway at 83rd Street near Madison Avenue just after 5 a.m. Monday, sexually assaulted her and stole a ring.
The suspect was caught on surveillance video dragging the woman.
Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said a tipster recognized Ritter from surveillance video broadcast on television and Ritter was taken into custody from his East New York apartment.
Kelly said the Ritter failed to register with the state as a sex offender.
"He's been arrested several times, arrested at least 11 times. He's been arrested in Minnesota. He's been arrested in North Dakota, in Arkansas, California we believe," said Kelly. "After questioning, he made a written statement and a video statement implicating himself in the crime."
Meanwhile, police were investigating on Thursday another attack in the same area.
Police say a 25-year-old woman was assaulted on 90th Street near Lexington Avenue on May 22.
The attack was broken up by a doorman.
The man police are looking for is about 5'6" tall and weighing around 180 pounds.
Police say the physical description does not match that of Ritter.
