The city's beaches are officially open for the summer 2011 season, and those heading out for some fun in the sun can expect a few upgrades.
Rockaway Beach in Queens has new concession stands and beach tennis courts, and Orchard Beach in the Bronx has doubled in size.
Seven of the 14 miles of beaches managed by the city are open for swimming, but only when lifeguards are on duty, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The city also says the number of lifeguards will not be affected by budget cuts.
In Coney Island, beachgoers who spoke with NY1 say the warm weather is more than welcome.
"It's really sunny and I really like it," said one New Yorker.
"It's wonderful. Finally I can relax, open my door, the sunshine, it's exactly what I've been waiting for all this time," said another.
Beginning in July, Coney Island Beach will be showing free films.
The Parks Department is reminding New Yorkers that smoking is now prohibited on beaches.
