A United States Marine is dead after being hit by a car early this morning on the West Side Highway.

The 22-year-old was hit at 49th Street around 1 a.m.

Investigators say the victim was with a group of fellow Marines who got out of a cab and headed toward Pier 88 where their ship -- the USS Iwo Jima -- is berthed for "Fleet Week."

That's when he was hit by a car traveling southbound on the highway.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

"This is a tragic event and very sad day for our Marine Corps family and our thoughts and prayers are with our Marine and his family as they deal with this tragedy," said Colonel Frank Donovan of the U.S. Marine Corps.

The driver pulled over a block away from the accident, called 911, and returned to the scene to wait for emergency personnel.

No charges have been filed against them.

"Fleet Week" activities will continue as planned.
