A thousand building superintendents and managers graduated Monday from Green Supers, a program that teaches efficient ways to run buildings.

The United States Energy Secretary Stephen Chu joined city leaders in congratulating Green Supers’ first class.

Organizers said nearly 80 percent of all greenhouse gas emissions in the city come from buildings, and simple steps like better insulation or energy-efficient light bulbs can make a big difference.

Graduates said their tenants are also looking forward to the savings in energy and costs.

"Not only are they noticing it,” said graduate Victor Nazario, “they're excited about it because everybody's hearing more and more about greening the buildings. So when I'm able to explain it to them in an articulate way, especially after taking this course, they're able not only to understand it but embrace it and be a part of the change.”

“We're all concerned about the environment,” said Mike Fishman, president of the 32BJ Service Employees Union. “We're all concerned about climate change. We're all concerned about greenhouse emissions, gas emissions. And we wanted to do something about it."

The program has already started training the next thousand supers and managers.
