NYPD Officer Accused Of Rape Says He Was Preaching Sobriety

Officer Kenneth Moreno, one of two NYPD officers on trial for allegedly raping a woman in the East Village in 2008, took the stand in his own defense Monday for the first time since the trial began.

Moreno testified that he had a previous drinking problem and now tries to help others to quit. He said that he and his partner returned to the woman's apartment multiple times because he was trying to convince her to give up alcohol.

Moreno said he even sang her a verse of "Living On A Prayer" by Bon Jovi to lift her spirits.

The alleged victim admits to being drunk that night and surveillance video shows the officers returning to the woman's home several times.

Officer Franklin Mata, seen above, who is accused of being Moreno's lookout, testified earlier Friday that when his partner was alone in a bedroom with the accuser, he was taking a nap on the woman's couch.

Mata said Moreno and the drunk woman were acting "flirty" while the accuser was throwing up in her apartment.

However, when asked if Moreno committed rape, Mata said that his partner "wouldn't do a thing like that."

Prosecutors say Mata acted as a lookout while Moreno raped the woman.

The officers were called to escort the woman out of a cab because she was intoxicated.

Both officers face up to 25 years in prison if they are convicted.
